Butcher block

Butcher block peninsulas and countertops

The sage kitchen’s peninsula is an edge-grain butcher block top with a rounded end, standing on black steel legs and a cast iron pedestal. Countertops are on our list too, sized to your layout and finished for kitchen use.

To keep it usable as a cutting surface, oil it with food-grade mineral oil instead of sealing it:

Cost

What affects the price

We don’t publish a Cambium price. Your estimate comes with the plan after the consultation. These national figures show what moves the number.

How pricing works

The main cost drivers

  • Size. Linear feet of cabinets, and how high they go.
  • Wood and finish. The species, and paint or stain. See the wood guide.
  • Drawers and fittings. Drawer banks and pull-outs take more parts than doors and shelves.
  • The rest of the remodel. Old cabinet removal, countertops and permits.

How much do custom kitchen cabinets cost?

Nationally, HomeGuide puts custom cabinets at $500 to $1,200 per linear foot installed, about $850 on average, or $15,000 to $30,000 for an average-size kitchen. Those are national figures, not our prices. We give you an estimate with the plan after the consultation. More on pricing.

What are your cabinet boxes made of?

¾-inch pre-finished plywood. Plywood holds nails and screws extremely well, while screws in particleboard may loosen slightly over time (Deslaurier’s comparison of the two). Painted parts are solid hardwood underneath, and the hardware is premium soft-close.

What’s the difference between custom, semi-custom and stock cabinets?

Stock and semi-custom cabinets come from a catalog, in a limited range of materials and colors, and they may not fit non-standard spaces. Custom cabinets are built to order for one room. HomeGuide lists stock and semi-custom at $100 to $700 per linear foot installed and custom at $500 to $1,200. Custom also takes longer, since nothing comes off a shelf; you get a timeline with the plan.

What does paint-grade mean?

Stain-grade wood is picked for how its grain looks under a clear or stained finish. Paint-grade is picked for a smooth, stable painted surface. On our cabinets that surface is solid hardwood: it’s our standard under all paint-grade finishes.

What’s the best wood for kitchen cabinets?

It depends on the look and how hard the kitchen gets used. On the Janka hardness scale (The Wood Database), hickory rates 1,880 lbf, hard maple 1,450, white oak 1,350, red oak 1,220, walnut 1,010 and cherry 950. Harder woods resist dents better. The wood guide puts them side by side.
