Cabinetry and built-ins

Built-in entertainment centers and media walls

Fireplace and media walls designed as one piece: cabinets, bookcases and overmantels built around your fireplace and equipment, with power and cable openings settled before we build.

What we build

Around the TV and the fireplace

A custom media wall for a living room around Springfield, MO usually runs the whole fireplace wall, mixing closed storage for the equipment with open shelves for everything else.

  • Fireplace built-ins Matching cabinets and bookcases in the alcoves on both sides of the fireplace.
  • Overmantels and TV walls Slatted or paneled chimney walls, like the painted slat overmantel further down, with openings cut for the TV.
  • Media bases Low cabinets with shaker doors for the receiver, consoles and cables, under an open TV bay.
  • Bookcases and display shelves Open shelves over closed bases, finished with crown at the top.
  • Openings for power and cables Planned with you before any cutting, so the cords disappear where the TV and equipment sit.
  • Paint or stain Stained like the gray-brown fireplace built-ins, or painted like the off-white slat wall. Painted parts are solid hardwood.

Planning

Planning a media wall

Tell us about these early. They decide where every opening, shelf and door goes.

  • The TV. Its size, and the height you want to watch it at.
  • The equipment. Receiver, speakers, consoles, and anything that needs air around it.
  • Power and cables. Where outlets and low-voltage lines come through the wall, so the openings land in the right spots.
  • The fireplace. Wood near a firebox has clearance rules in the building code and the fireplace manual. The design works around them.
  • The shelves. Books, photos, games or baskets, so shelf depth and spacing fit what goes on them.
  • The finish. Stained to sit with other wood in the room, or painted.

Built on our cabinet standards. ¾-inch pre-finished plywood boxes, solid hardwood under all paint-grade finishes and premium soft-close hardware.

Cost

What affects the price

We don’t publish a Cambium price. Your estimate comes with the plan after the consultation. For scale, these are HomeGuide’s national figures.

How pricing works

The main cost drivers

  • Size. A floor-to-ceiling wall uses far more than a low media base.
  • Doors, drawers and shelves. Closed storage costs more to build than open shelving.
  • Power and lighting. New outlets and lighting add cost beyond the woodwork.
  • Finish. Stain or paint, and the species underneath.

How much does a built-in entertainment center cost?

HomeGuide puts a built-in entertainment center at $1,500 to $9,000 on average nationally, with large floor-to-ceiling units that add drawers, lighting and hidden outlets running past $12,000. Those are national figures. We don’t publish our own prices; your estimate comes with the plan.

Can you build around a fireplace?

Yes. The built-ins on this page fill both alcoves beside a gas fireplace. Wood near a fireplace opening has to meet clearance rules in the building code and in the fireplace maker’s installation manual, so we plan the cabinets, shelves and any mantel work around them.

How do you handle the TV wires?

We plan the openings for power and low-voltage cables before anything gets cut, based on where the TV and equipment will sit. The slat overmantel on this page has openings cut in for exactly that. If you need new outlets, plan them early: HomeGuide puts an added outlet at $150 to $350 nationally.

Can the built-ins be painted or stained?

Either. The fireplace built-ins here are in a gray-brown stain and the slat overmantel is painted off-white. Anything we paint is solid hardwood underneath. The wood guide shows how finish changes each species.
